-Midwest Book Review
Aimed at youth players and coaches, Marty Schupak’s latest title-using the winning formula of bite-sized tips and tricks delivered via voiceover and video demonstrations-is sure to help boys and girls of summer on the diamond. Among the topics covered are the importance of warm-ups (studies show that even a 3-to 5-minute session can prevent injuries for players of all ages), selecting the correct glove size (Schupak notes that many pros these days are sporting gloves that are only slightly bigger than their hands), and dealing with the confusion that may come with a barrage of shouts from teammates and parents in the stands (for example when an outfielder snags a ball and must make a split second decision what to do; Schupak counsels uncertain players to simply throw to the nearest infielder).Other tips run the gamut: the mechanics of fielding; communication (asking the ump for a timeout doesn’t mean he heard the request) ; effective throwing positions for catchers, pitchers, and other players: proper equipment; and much more. Schupak and his crew spend a lot of time studying what kids typically do on the field, and their pinpoint analysis of both individual and team mistakes, combined with solid corrections, make this a valuable resource. Highly recommended!
-Video Librarian Review
This fine video from Marty Schupak and Youth Sports Club concentrates on common mistakes in youth baseball fielding, base running, and hitting while providing techniques enabling the coach to teach the game in a manner that is both instructive and fun. Each of the mistakes is handled as a separate chapter and can be easily accessed from the main menu. Since the overall program is brief, coaches may choose to run the video occasionally as a checklist of potential errors to address in their team’s preparation. Parents and players will find the equipment chapters to be valuable for choosing properly sized bats, gloves, and catcher’s equipment. The program is very well done, fairly priced, and is recommended for coaches, parents, and public library youth sports collections.
